Tom and the Girls…Morning Lessons From the Turkeys

As our kids are preparing a video on blue birds on the farm, here is a photo of our resident Tom Turkey and his harem, The Seven Sisters 😊 

Tom and the girls ask us a question this morning, to be answered in many ways. Give it a try and share your answers… 

So, why did the turkey cross the road? 

• Science: Meleagris gallopavo is displaying for the harem as they forage; where do turkeys like to live? How many toes does a tom turkey have?
• Math: Balance the equation… If Tom weighs twice as much as any one hen, and there is one tom and six hens, create an algebraic equation to balance the weight of the turkeys on two sides of the road. 1T + 2H = 4H; add up all the turkeys in the picture, if three fly away, how many are left?

• Politics: How can this turkey best lead his flock!!!!
• Poetry: TURKEY… Tom! Utterly, Regal, King. Eloquent and Yummy
• Analogy: Tom is to turkey as _____ is to ______
• Logic: If Tom is a turkey, and a road is to cross, therefore he will cross it
• Epistemology: What is the source of Tom’s knowing whether to cross the road or not? Does he really know?
• Grammar: Five turkeys is [less than or fewer than] eight turkeys? Therefore, there are [less or fewer] turkeys than before?
• Pop-Culture: How would Tom give his harem directions to a new feeding ground across the road using only 140 characters? Does he have a favorite emoji for his girls – draw it! Does Tom like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or TiKToK and why?
• Engineering: Construct a turkey out of paper that can cross a road.
• Literature: In what great bodies of literature are turkeys mentioned? Write your own short story featuring a turkey and a road.
• History: How did turkeys get to England? There are several theories… what do you think?
• Cooking: Shape cookie dough into turkey shapes (hands work well).
