Pandemic, Plantations, Aristotle and Afforestation… Crazy, Sad Times and Opportunity
Or
Marie Antoinette Day 😊
As sad and as hard as these times are right now, our family is trying to see opportunities to learn and grow. Trying!
We learned last week in our teen philosophy discussion about Aristotle’s categories of reasoning, and realized this was the beginning of scientific classification of living things – how cool! We found great comfort in learning that, according to Aristotle, things exist in categories despite our putting them into such – they just are; they exist whether we reason or not. In other words, it might be that the Strix varia calling WHOooooo the other evening is classified by family and order, still, that haunting call of the Barred Owl rang through the witching hour dusk whether we humans classified him or not 😊
This big picture view of nature and existence brings our family comfort, perspective, connection, even hope and a greater sense of compassion for all of us. It brings us back to focusing on what we can do. And then, we see opportunity!
In the kids’ current coursework, they are learning about a project called Project Drawdown – an organization that has identified the 100 most important ways to reverse global climate change. There are so many things our family can enact on our recovering tree farm – tree plantations, intercropping and afforestation for starters!
Here is a little video from Zoë and Zach of our family trimming our conifers on the farm. Each time we go out to lop and trim, the kids call it “Marie Antoinette Day” – because we lop the tops of the overgrown trees to promote fuller growth.
Sending good thoughts.
