When we think of the creative process of art – any kind of art – we tend to think in terms of the boundless, or as one of the Pre-Socratic philosophers referred to the ultimate Source… indeterminate boundless. What fun it is to think of such a source that makes anything possible!

When we think in this way, that is, when we think in terms of the possibilities of just about anything and everything, we enter into the world of innovation, imagination, or even, in philosophical terms, truth. Humor me 😊

Art is truth. Art is truth if only because it represents a truth beyond which any other form of expression can communicate. Art represents entirety. And, quite possibly, there is no other greater form of artistic expression than in nature.

Nature is perfect at expressing itself artistically… mathematically-artistically, anthropologically-artistically, scientifically, spiritually, sociologically artistically, and so on.

Nature is the Great Creative. And therefore, within nature, anything is possible!

So, let’s try some fun ways to capture the artistic possibilities of nature. Here are a few ideas to get started…

  • Take some photos from around the yard… from upside down, from on your tip-toes, from a funny angle.
  • Try taking a photo that conveys a fragrance, an odor, something that makes us feel softness or a prickly touch.
  • Find patterns – in leaves, buds, blades of grass, petals, in sounds, on tree bark. What patterns did you find? How do those patterns compare to patterns within your house?
  • Find a rock, have a conversation with that rock – what questions would you ask your rock, and what and how would it answer?
